A Few Ants and a Few Scars: The Spiritual Meaning of Ants 🐜

After several unexpected encounters with ants — and a few scars from fire ant bites — I started wondering about the spiritual meaning and symbolism of ants. Across traditions, ants symbolize perseverance, resilience, organization, patience and the power of working together. Those lessons resonate deeply with me as I build Unchained Mothering and search for the right people to come together around a purposeful mission

Over the past month and a half, ants have crossed my path a few times — and left a few scars along the way.

First, in North Florida, while walking my dog, I was bitten by fire ants. A first for me, definitely not pleasant, and I still have a little scar. Then another encounter in Key Biscayne, near the beach while picking up my son. And now, ants have appeared again.

So naturally, I became curious: what are all these little ants trying to teach me?

Across many spiritual traditions and systems of symbolism, ants carry remarkably similar meanings: perseverance, resilience, patience, organization, preparation and collective effort. Tiny as they are, they can carry far beyond what we might expect. They encounter obstacles and find another way. They prepare, they persist, and above all, they work together toward something greater than what one could accomplish alone.

It resonates particularly with where I am today with Unchained Mothering. I am trying to find the right people — people with goodness in their hearts, respect for one another, different strengths and talents, and a genuine desire to work together toward something purposeful, to make a difference.

Because resilience helps us continue when things are difficult. Perseverance keeps us moving. Organization gives our efforts direction. But the right people working together can carry what would be far too heavy for one person alone.

So perhaps a few ants — and a few scars — are a little reminder for me: keep going, stay organized, be resilient, and find your colony. 🐜💕
