Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah — a celebration of miracle and light. 🕯️
A few days ago, we met Omer Shem Tov in person and listened to him share what he lived through on October 7, 2023, while he was dancing at the Nova Festival. As he spoke, he reminded us of something profound: even in the deepest darkness, light exists. It is up to us to look for it — and to help it grow.
This morning, I woke up to horrific news from Bondi Beach in Sydney. And yet, amid the fear, a good Samaritan stepped in and disarmed the attacker. A reminder that courage, humanity, and light still show up — even when darkness tries to take over. My heart goes to the victims and their families and I m so sad to write this again!
Darkness feeds on fear, violence, silence, and cowardice.
Light grows through courage, compassion, action, and love.
So whether you are Jewish or not, tonight — and from this day forward — find a way to bring more light into the world. Speak up. Do good. Show up for others.
We have to try.
It is in our hands.
With light and love,
Jessica aka Hopeje ✨
PS: the menorah we will be lighting this hannouca has been given to us by the parents of our niece’s husband, who have found it in the attic of their home in the Netherlands. The town they are living in was once populated by a Jewish population prior to the 2nd world war.
