✨ For this New Year, may we all be sealed in the Book of Life. Wishing everyone a Shana Tova Umetouka, G’mar Hatima Tova—and may we see the return of the hostages soon.
As the world is reborn, and just like that enter the year 5786. The rabbi reminded us that the shofar* is tied to Isaac, who in the end was not sacrificed, and back to Sarah, who laughed when the angels told her she would have a child—though she and Abraham were old and had tried without success. Isaac means laughter. No matter how badly others may treat us, we are not poor victims. We can shift our perspective, act one action at a time, and turn the situation into something more positive. We can laugh even in the hardest moments, because deep down H. has our best at heart—just as our ancestors trusted before us.
Yes, these days the world is upside down. Who would have believed that people would not react with compassion and a loud voice to the attacks of 0ct 7 in Isr@el? Who would have believed that people would be silent in front of the rise of extremism, of women losing their rights around the world? Who would have believed that it would lead to more antisemitism, and in such an unapologetic way! That people would tell them to their face the bad they intend to do and yet people side with them walking in the streets claiming slogan brought to them by a tireless propaganda. That the Jewish people would once again need to care for themselves, as many world leaders are not caring for us—even if they say they do. Actions and inactions, in the end, speak louder than words. And it goes the same way with people—each and every one of those who share our lives or walk side by side with us on the streets.
At the same time, other world leaders and countries have shown exemplary leadership and actions, and we are very grateful to them. In any case, we have Isr@el, and everything is possible. Miracles are waiting, but we must be willing to open ourselves to them. Teshuva is not only about what we did—it is about who we choose to become, the direction we will take, and the steps we are taking.
We are blessed. No matter the country we stand in, we are united. Whether, in Miami with English and Hebrew, in Paris with French and Hebrew, in Berlin with German and Hebrew in the siddur, in Italy with Italian and Hebrew and so on—or in Israel, where it is only Hebrew—the prayers remain the same. Across the world, at the same moment, we are one people.
🎗️Grateful to all who protect us and our freedom. Always in our ❤️ and 🙏
Let’s double-check our sources, keep learning, and stay mindful — stronger together for the good of all.
🍯🍎 Shana Tova Umetouka—a sweet, healthy, and united New Year to all.
With love and light, always
Jessica
